norm, nice post. IMHO, the 2 main ingredients in a heart of worship are spirit and truth. in a corporate setting, ultimately there ought be a three way connection between the minister, congregants and the holy spirit... and everyone should worship genuinely (ie. truth). everything else (lighting, music, etc.), frankly, is icing on the cake. we often create an atmosphere where we "can feel god's presence" or "invite god to be in our midst." meanwhile, god is everywhere... all we have to do is tune in... maybe we're just dialing in the wrong frequency?!

haha i like the dim lights soothing music stuff!
but to respond more seriously: i've had the Holy Spirit meet me when there was one guy on a guitar, a couple people singing really quietly/badly, and misspelled lyrics on powerpoint. so i know without a doubt that formula has nothing to do with it - it's all about heart, sincerity, and invitation. on the other hand, i don't think there's anything wrong with approaching worship with a structured vision of where you want to take the worshippers. that kind of "formula" may not always pan out and they can't be relied on 100%, but nothing wrong with going in those kinds of guidelines in your/the band's head.

i dunno if this made any sense. i'm sleepy and (food-)comatose.

I've been thinking about this issue a lot, especially since I seem to be a member of the "giving" party a lot.

I think a lot of these unwritten formulas are bad the minute we start to rely on them rather than God's Spirit Himself. There's always that fine line between doing everything we can to create an atmosphere that's conducive to worship occurring, and one where we're trying to manipulate people into it.

In the end, I suppose we always need to check our heart, every time we pick up the guitar, flick some light switches, or sing a single word.

Wow, my comment added absolutely nothing to this entry. LOL!
