over the weekend my grandmother (maamaa) was admitted into the hospital. as my brothers and i and some other family members gathered around her bed at the hospital i started wondering what she was thinking. my grandma is a very sane grandma. sometimes when i meet other people’s grandmas or run into other old ladies on the street, i think theyre a little crazy. so… knowing that she’s not crazy and she was looking at us, not understanding a single word we were saying (because we were speaking english) i wonder what she was thinking.

was she looking at her grandchildren and reflecting on her life. moving from a small village in china to new york city? she looked tired but she seemed happy. when i’m getting old and near the end of my days on earth what will i be thinking about?
