Advent Week Three: Joy

I got to experience joy this week.

Weeks of hopping from church to church, while exciting in its own way, can be exhausting for the soul. This past Sunday we visited Minnow’s church in Harlem called Renaissance. It was such a great Sunday to visit.

I know every Sunday will not be like this; Minnow told us that most Sundays are not as “produced” as this service, though the musicians and artists are still of this caliber every week.

I remember being drawn into the emotion of the first soloist’s rendition of O Come, O come, Emmanuel. The supporting choir. The musical conversation back and forth. It set the stage for the rest of service. I began to see how the readings, the poetry, the lyrics, the message, the closing songs of joy… all of it helped us see Jesus.

It has been a long time since I’ve been at a church service that included the arts in such a way that moved me so deeply.

Hope. Peace. Joy.
